Adding subpages to the Book
Please use the input box at the bottom of the book page to add subpages to the current page. It will preload the template for the including of the newly created page into the in-book navigation. The template call looks like {{pageindex}}
, do not delete it.
Page name format
In the Book namespace please follow these simple rules for pages naming:
- Book name can be anything, just do not use illegal caracters.
- Adding subpages please make sure that you put a three digits, a period and a space before the textual part of the title:
003. Textual part of the title
Pages subordination defines the book structure and the three digits zero left padded number defines the order of sibling headers. It is important that your input complies with these rules, otherwise automatic tables of contents may not work properly.
Changing the title of pages
To change the title of the book chapters you are to use Special:MovePage. Do not forget to mark the checkbox "Move up to 100 subpages to the new title" if appears.
To change the name of the book itself, you need to move it also. The title you see in the edit form was used at the moment of the book creation to calculate the page name. Anyway, it is a good practice to keep it synchronized wth the page name after the book renaming.
Illegal characters
The following punctuation symbols may cause problems if used in the page name:
[]{}|#' - These are needed for link and template syntax, never enable them. <> - These cause problems with HTML escaping, don't use. % - Minor problems with path to query rewrite rules, see below. Included in the default allow list. + - Doesn't work with path to query rewrite rules, corrupted by apache. Included in the default allow list since MediaWiki 1.8.0. In some rare cases you may wish to remove + for compatibility with old links. ? - Doesn't work with path to PATH_INFO rewrites. Included in the default allow list. , - Default delimiter in Semantic and other queries results
Page name length
Up to 5 sublevels are supported in the Book namespace. The total length of the page name shall not exceed ~250 characters.
